Is Reiki a religion? What exactly is it anyway?

WORKING WITH ENERGY

Reiki is simply one form of hands-on healing, with its origins in the far east dating back many thousands of years to a time beyond Christ or Buddha. The actual original name, discipline, and technique of this method of healing were mostly lost due to the traditional method of passing knowledge along by word of mouth. Exactly when this ancient art of healing virtually disappeared is difficult to determine. However, a Japanese scholar and monk named Dr. Mikao Usui (1865-1926) rediscovered the discipline and it was Dr Usui who fashioned the name REIKI and brought to the west.

Rei-ki is a two syllable Japanese word meaning universal life force. Although the proper Japanese pronunciation is RYE-KEY, it has been Westernized to RAY-KEY. Rei means universal, spiritual, & omnipresent - present everywhere at the same time. Esoterically, Rei means spiritual consciousness, the omniscient wisdom from God Source. Ki is the nonphysical vitality that brings life to all living things. Many cultures understand and recognize the importance of Ki energy and how it impacts our lives and well-being. Ki energy can be activated for the purpose of healing.

Many successful disciplines such as Reiki, Tai Chi, Feng Shui, Meditation, Yoga, and Acupuncture have been developed with the purpose to enhance the flow of this vital energy in and around the body. The energy itself is omniscient wisdom. When you are feeling healthy and full of enthusiasm, the flow of Ki energy in your body is high and unencumbered. Generally speaking, it is understood that illnesses and disease result from constricted flow of this life force energy. The most common remarks shared after Reiki is that stress levels have decreased and peace & tranquility are notably increased. Recent studies illustrate that with regular healing sessions such as Reiki, the physiology of the body changes, healing ensues, and the immune system is strengthened.*

Human beings are spiritual beings having a human experience. We are connected to God/Source/Universal Wisdom through our “Higher Selves”; as such, we have access to this universal energy that breathes life into all sentient beings. A Reiki student learns under a Master Teacher the methodology, symbols, and the art of moving energy through their body or that of another. Today there are well over 30 different styles of Reiki and the list is growing. In the Mikao Usui method, there are four stages of training to become a certified Reiki Master. Yet aside from any of these teachings, there should be a degree of discipline and integrity beyond the knowledge of information. When coherence is held and receptivity exists, an individual will always receive that which is most beneficial for them in any moment.

To clarify, God or Source or Universal Wisdom is the healer. Conscious of the physical and subtle bodies, Reiki practitioners are clear conduits for Divine healing to flow for a person in accord with their specific needs. They move into a slightly altered state to hold coherence and focus for the healee. In such a state, the healing frequencies easily flow through for the recipient. Their body’s intelligence knows precisely what will assist them in any given moment. Intentions are cast for the healing and assimilation to continue as long as the recipient’s field is calling them forth. The client always reserves the ability to discontinue this process at any moment, as free will is always respected.

In RAH, preparations have been made prior to the person’s arrival. The client need not formally prepare, although it is advised to avoid caffeine and any other substances that alter their state of mind. The healee simply rests comfortably on their back on a massage table. Some prefer to wear an eye mask and might even fall asleep during their session. This is perfectly fine and sometimes preferential, as being in a state of sleep quiets the mind that could otherwise be creating a state of resistance to the process.

An invocation, or opening prayer, begins the session. Establishing a connection with the etheric field and with the client’s subtle bodies, I typically begin at the head and move toward the feet. I will place my hands over various areas on the body; however, I will not touch any sensitive regions of the body. Often, but not always, the client may be asked to also lay on their stomach for a short time. The time held in each position varies and is determined intuitively. Crystals, crystal essences, essential oils, and other tools may be utilized, as guided. The length of a session may be as brief as specified by the client, but could extend to over an hour.

Once completed, I end the session with closing intentions and prayer. The client might rest for a few minutes before rising, but many feel rested and rejuvenated and eager to move on with their day. The repetition of sessions is dependent on the client’s preference and their subjective assimilation process. Typically, both the healer and the healee are energized from this modality!

Follow up from sessions have yet to disappoint! Every person reports an improvement in some aspect of their life. Often, it is physical relief from a specific ailment or discomfort, a desire to implement a more disciplined level of self-care, clarity of thought, peace in the heart/mind, and relationships may seem to evolve with more ease and grace. Everyone receives exactly what their body is calling for in that particular moment, as Divine wisdom prevails.
